Tomates farcies, which means stuffed tomatoes, is a very common everyday meal in France. It is easy to make, and pleases the whole family, including kids. It is typical to serve it for dinner, with rice on the side. A quick, easy, and delicious family dinner!
This is my personal recipe. Ingredients are for one stuffed tomato. More likely than not, you will have to make several stuffed tomatoes, about one stuffed tomato per person. Sprinkling with cheese is optional.
Tip: to empty the tomatoes, you can use a big spoon like an ice cream scoop, or a corer.
Slice the tomato horizontally so as to remove the top part. Set aside the top. Remove the inside pulp of the tomato with a spoon or corer. Sprinkle insides with salt. Turn the tomato upside down, and set aside. This will allow any excess water to come out of the tomato.
Cube cut the pulp you removed from the inside of the tomato. In a bowl, mix it with the ground beef. Add the olive oil and all the herbs and spices. Mix. Season with salt and pepper. Set aside in the fridge for 1 hour to let the flavors mingle.
Preheat the oven to 390 degrees Fahrenheit. Stuff the inside of the tomato with your flavored beef mixture. (Optional: sprinkle the top with shredded cheese). Cover with the top of the tomato. Place in a baking dish.
Bake in the oven for 30 minutes. Make sure the meat is well cooked. If not the case, bake for longer. Enjoy warm.
