My Valentine’s Day Cookies are similar to the Halloween Sablés Cookies I loved making for Halloween. The idea is the same, but, since these are Valentine’s day cookies, I am using heart-shaped cookie cutters and strawberry preserve for the red color. I also decided to use a different recipe for the dough, that does not contain any almond flour. That way, you can gift the cookies to everyone, including those with nut allergies.
Recipe
French recipe here. As I mentioned before, I am using strawberry preserve. Alternatively, you could use raspberry preserve or any other red preserve.
You will need heart-shaped cookie cutters.
- 9 oz. All purpose flour (250g)
- 4 1/2 oz. butter (125g)
- 4 1/2 oz. granulated sugar (125g)
- 1 pinch salt
- 1 egg
- strawberry preserve (enough to spread on cookies)
- powdered sugar (for decoration)
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Mix the flour, softened butter, granulated sugar, salt and egg, either by hand or by putting it in your food processor, until you have a uniform dough. Gather the dough into a ball.
- Using a rolling pin, roll it out, and use your cookie cutters to cut out your cookies. For each cookie you will be making, you will need one “bottom” cookie and one top “cookie.” So if you are making different shapes, make sure you have at least 2 of each shape (one will be the top cookie, the other one the bottom). Make an opening on each cookie what you intend to use as a top cookie. I used a smaller heart-shaped cookie cutter to make the opening. If you don’t have a smaller cookie cutter, you can draw an opening with a knife.
- Place your cookies on a baking pan covered with parchment paper. Bake for 10–15 minutes (depending on the thickness of your cookies).
- Spread strawberry preserve on the cookies with no openings (the bottom cookies). Sprinkle powdered sugar on the cookies with openings (the top cookies).
- Then, place each top cookie on top of its bottom cookie. Enjoy!
Tip: keep the part you removed to make an opening on your top cookies. You will have small heart cookies, that you can sprinkle with powdered sugar before serving.
Bon Appétit, and Happy Valentine’s Day!
